Generally, the reception of Eucharist takes place following two years of preparation in a parish program. For most children this is at the completion of second grade. Since it is necessary for a child to understand the mystery of Christ’s presence in the Eucharist, this two year catechesis provides a sound basis to explore and grasp the sacredness of the sacrament.
Preparation for reception of Eucharist is preceded by catechesis to understand the healing power of the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Penance. Children are given the opportunity to receive this sacrament prior to reception of Eucharist.
Children, with the support of their families, who desire to receive Eucharist and are beyond Grade 3 are encouraged to participate in RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation of Children).
